One of the cornerstones of ending violence against women and girls is education.
The 2016 – 2020 strategy states in its vision for 2020 that
“There is a significant reduction in the number of VAWG victims, achieved by challenging the deep-rooted social norms, attitudes and behaviours that discriminate against and limit women and girls, and by educating, informing and challenging young people about healthy relationships, abuse and consent.” (Ending Violence against Women and Girls. Strategy 2016 – 2020. HM Government. March 2016)
A whole school approach has to begin with high quality Safeguarding, PSHE and Relationships Education which can tackle issues and give young people an open forum for discussion.
Some of the topics covered by VAWG are sensitive and can seem challenging; it is therefore important that schools consider a well-designed and planned approach for which staff are prepared and trained.
